Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo had surgery performed on his right ankle at a hospital in Amsterdam on Monday morning.
"The surgery went well and he is expected to go home tomorrow," hospital spokesman Johan Kortenray said.
No further details on the operation or a timetable for the winger's return were provided but Manchester United was expected to release a statement on Monday.
The new Premier League campaign begins in mid-August.
After Portugal was eliminated by Germany in the quarter-finals of last month's European Championship, Ronaldo revealed that he had played through pain on the ankle for the last three months.
He elected to travel to the Academic Medical Center on Sunday night to see surgeon Niek van Dijk.
